Hilly Chase Speaker Series | Eric Wiberg ’86 | The Search for Lost Planes
Eric Wiberg, Eaglebrook Class of 1986, returned to campus on Wednesday, April 9, as a guest speaker for our Hilly Chase Speaker Series. In a fascinating presentation, Eric shared stories from his life’s work uncovering downed aircraft across the Bahamas and New England—many dating back to World War II.

A lifelong explorer and historian, Eric spoke about the long search for his first B-26 bomber, the thrill of discovery, and the emotional weight of what he calls “sad shovel work.” From using local knowledge to navigate swamps and jungles, to honoring the memory of those who died in service, Eric’s mission is more than recovery—it’s about closing the loop on untold stories.

Highlights from his talk include:

  • His first B-26 discovery in the Bahamas and the 35-year journey to find it
  • Stories of plane wrecks hidden in New England’s wetlands
  • Insights into WWII’s women pilots and their unsung heroism
  • Why maritime law allows you to take only a small piece of a wreck
  • Leadership lessons from the field—and from Eaglebrook
Eric, who now volunteers to work out of a lighthouse and has kept a diary since his time at Eaglebrook, reminded students that “part of being good at something is knowing your limits,” and that true success often comes from never giving up.

Don't miss this amusing and adventure-filled talk from a proud Eaglebrook alumnus who lives by the words: “Get out, touch things, and get dirty.” Watch the talk here, on our YouTube Channel.
